Google Earth For Learning Media

Schoolash - 1 Introduction

Google Earth SBC 2006 or the so-called Unit Level Curriculum has hinted that a graduate school is expected to have certain competencies as has been mandated by the curriculum. Because of the demands of the curriculum has a direct impact on the learning process, the learning process is expected not only membelajarkan aspects of knowledge alone, but also include aspects of skills and attitude aspects. Associated with these objectives, the assessment process is not just limited to the aspects of the results, but aspects of the process should also not escape assessment.

In the primary school curriculum was radically program structure, there are some subjects, one of which is the Social Sciences in this regard as one of the subjects that diUASkan (Syllabus Drafting Team, 2005: 47) and in the future is not impossible diUASBNkan.

To achieve that purpose, the learning process is conducive to student learning fond of Social Sciences and leading to a master student competencies in the field of Social Sciences. For learning varied and not monotonous or boring, used a variety of learning methods, both theory and practice so that the attitude of the Social Sciences fond easily embedded in students. This can be achieved if an attempt is made active, creative, effective and fun (AJEL).

Facilitate learning for students is the main task of the teacher. For that teachers are not only required to make the atmosphere become comfortable and attractive learning, creating learning methods appropriate to the circumstances of each student ourselves, but also to find media that is relevant, effective and efficient. So the methods and approaches will be applied too strictly in accordance with the development of the pupil which is the subject and object of education itself.

Indeed, education is not merely the application of the theory of teaching and learning in the classroom. Education is a complex ikhatiar to improve the quality of human resources of a nation. However , careful selection of instructional media is a necessity in the success or failure of students into a generation of teachers to deliver a reliable and proud.

Therefore , teachers should use media that not only makes learning porses be attractive, but also provide a space for students to be creative and be actively involved throughout the learning porses. So the cognitive, affective and psychomotor students can be fully developed simultaneously without experiencing distortion of one of them. In reality what the expectations and objectives of the above have not been fully met. But the effort in that direction is always done by all elements of education.

2 Why Using the Media Google Earth?

Natural appearance of the material and social status Neighboring Countries is one of the subject matter first semester of sixth grade social studies contained in SBC, and it turns out most of the teachers in making learning still conventional, meaning that teachers still dominate the course of learning and not learning to use the media to the fullest so that the learning is done tend to be less attractive students. In addition , teachers have not fully utilize visual aids in teaching of Social Sciences. Most still struggling on standard props / that's it. Based on the fact of using a map, atlas or globe (2-dimensional media). To overcome this it is necessary to test the use of new learning media.

Hope the next, I want to improve the learning process by utilizing the use of props and new media are up to date but without any intention to override / underestimated existing media. It is expected that by using new media coloring Google Earth over the learning process so that learning is more meaningful, passionate and CTL (Active, Creative, Effective and Fun). On the other side of the students were finally going to be more familiar and more control of the computer and the internet.

7 Observations Against Increasing Student Motivation Learning

Google Earth is a virtual globe program that is actually called Earth Viewer, and was created by Keyhole, Inc. The program charted the earth from the superimposition of images collected from satellites mapping, aerial photography and GIS 3D globe. Available in three different licenses: Google Earth, a free version with limited functionality; Google Earth Plus ($ 20), which has extra features; and Google Earth Pro ($ 400 per year), which is used for commercial use. This product, later renamed Google Earth in 2005, and is now available for personal computers running Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, or Vista, Mac OS X 10. 3. 9 and above, Linux (released on June 12, 2006), and FreeBSD. In addition to releasing an updated Keyhole based client, Google also added the imagery from the Earth database to their web based mapping software. The launch of Google Earth caused an improvement over the media coverage on virtual globes between 2005 and 2006, attracted public attention on geospatial technologies and applications.

The viewer shows the house, the color of the car, and even the shadows of people and street signs. Resolutions are available depending on the destination, but most areas (except for some islands) is covered in the 15-meter resolution. Las Vegas, Nevada and Cambridge, Massachusetts has the highest resolution, at a height of 15 cm (6 inches). Google Earth allows users search for addresses (for some countries), enter coordinates, or use the mouse to find the location.

Google Earth also has digital elevation model data (DEM) data collected by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission of NASA. This means one can see the Grand Canyon or Mount Everest in three dimensions, instead of 2D sites / programs other maps. Since November 2006, the 3D views of the mountains, including Mount Everest, have been used with the use of DEM data to meet the gate in SRTM coverage.

Many people who use this app to add their own data and making them available through various sources, such as BBS or blog. Google Earth is able to show all images of Earth's surface. and is also a Web Map Service client. Google Earth supports managing three-dimensional Geospatial data through Keyhole Markup Language (KML).

Google Earth has the ability to show buildings and structures (such as bridges) 3D, which consist of users' submissions using SketchUp, a 3D modeling program. The old version of Google Earth (before Version 4), 3D buildings are limited to a few cities, and had poorer rendering with no textures. Many buildings and structures around the world have detailed 3D; including (but not limited to) in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, India, Japan, Germany, Canada, Pakistan and the cities, Amsterdam and Alexandria. In August 2007, Hamburg became the first city entirely shown in 3D, including textures such as facade. Three-dimensional appearance that is available for some buildings and structures around the world via Google's 3D Warehouse and other websites.

Psychologically, there are students who are afraid or reluctant to teacher. With Google Earth media and learning activities will be more effective because they can be freely communicating. Students designated tried using Google Earth media will feel proud even more confident in front of the teacher and his friends. Thus the motivation to learn will increase as well. With Google Earth media, activities of teachers as a "storyteller" is reduced, and as a consequence remain active teachers observe, assess and interpret students in learning activities.

Hopefully this post can motivate and excite the spirit and inspire the teachers wherever they might be more viable to explore and discover new learning media that may be as material for the promotion of research and education in Indonesia.

This post is excerpted from Classroom Action Research with the title: "Efforts to Improve Learning Outcomes Through the Use of Social Media Google Earth for Sixth Grade Students of SDN Lambangan Wetan Fur District of Rembang In Semester 1 Academic Year 2008/2009" as one of the requirements to follow Elections Elementary School Teacher Achievement Level Rembang 2009.
