Dewi Sartika: Founder of the First Women's School in Indonesia

Being a fighter does not always have to take part in the war. See, the hero of a woman from West Java, Dewi Sartika.
He fought hard uplift women. In fact, he was willing to oppose the local custom. Yes, at that time a woman must not only achieve high levels of education. 


Women born in Bandung, December 4, 1884 grew up with the environment of people educated in the Sunda region. Parents Dewi Sartika, wanted his son to achieve a higher education. Finally, Dewi Sartika schooled in Dutch schools. Culture of the West founded from the Dutch assistant resident education.
At age teenagers, Goddess desperate to teach children in kepatihan servants. He often demonstrated practices in schools, teaching literacy, and Dutch. Cage chamber board the train, charcoal, and broken tiles maketh learning aids. 





The community uproar. because at that time, children rarely commoners who could write. Moreover, that teaches a girl.
When it started to teenagers, Dewi Sartika returned to her mother in Bandung. His soul is the more mature increasingly led him to realize his ideals. This was driven also by his uncle, the Regent Martanagara, his uncle, who does have similar desires.
Indigenous women in restraint at the time, making his uncle having trouble and worry. However, because the persistence of spirit that never subsided, Dewi Sartika finally able to convince his uncle and allowed to set up schools for girls. 


1906, Dewi Sartika married to Raden Kanduruan Suriawinata Agah, a person who has the vision and ideals the same time, teachers in School Coral Pamulang, who at the time was a Teacher Training School.
Since 1902, Dewi Sartika has pioneered education for women. In a small room, behind his mother's house in Bandung, Dewi Sartika teaching in the presence of a female family member. Crochet, cooking, sewing, reading, writing, etc., become the subject matter at that time 


After consultation with the Regents R.A. Martenagara, on January 16, 1904, Dewi Sartika open Sakola Wife (School of Women), first as the Dutch East Indies. Power teachers and three assisted by two brothers Dewi Sartika misannya, Ny. Poerwa and Nyi. Oewid. The students first generation consisted of 20 people, using the marquee room Bandung regency. 


A year later, 1905, the school added a class, so then moved to Jalan Ciguriang, Kebon Cau. The new location was purchased Dewi Sartika with personal savings, as well as private funding from the Regent of Bandung. The first graduates came out in 1909, to prove to our nation that women have the ability that is no different from men. 1910, using private property, school repair so that it can better meet the requirements of formal school completion. 


In the following years in several areas Pasundan emerging of Sakola Wife, mainly managed by women Sunda who have the same ideals with Dewi Sartika.
In September 1929, Dewi Sartika establishment of the school held a memorial that has been aged 25 years, which later changed its name to "Sakola Raden Goddess". For his services in this field, Dewi Sartika service medal awarded by the Dutch East Indies government. 


Dewi Sartika died 11 September 1947 in Tasikmalaya, and buried with a simple funeral ceremony at funeral Cigagadon Rahayu Village Sub-Cineam. Three years later re-buried in the cemetery complex in Jalan Karang Bandung Regent Anyar, Bandung.
