The Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Education

Currently the world is shocked by the outbreak of a disease caused by a virus called corona or known as covid-19 (Corona Virus diseases-19).

The virus that was allegedly started to plague December 31, 2019 in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, is now spreading almost everywhere in the world very quickly, so WHO on March 11, 2020 established this outbreak as a global pandemic.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been exposed to this virus around the world, and even tens of thousands have died. Noted countries that have high cases of exposure to co-19 today are Italy, China, Spain, the United States, and Iran with death rates reaching thousands of people. Very fast transmission and the difficulty of detecting people who are exposed because the incubation period of covid-19 is approximately two weeks is the cause of many casualties.
Transmission through contact between humans is difficult to predict because social activities that can not be avoided is the biggest cause of the spread of this co-19. An antidote that has not been found and the number of patients exposed to covid-19 is the highest cause of death. Hospitals and paramedics who menagani feel overwhelmed so much
patients that are not handled properly. Difficult Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for paramedics causes patients to fall including doctors and other paramedics who are also exposed
covid-19 so he finally died.

The complexity of the handling of this epidemic has led world leaders to adopt super policies
tight to break the chain of distribution of covid-19. Social distancing becomes a tough choice for every country in implementing policies to prevent the spread of co-19, because
this policy has a negative impact on all aspects of life.

Restrictions on social interaction
society can inhibit the rate of growth and progress in various fields of life, but there is no other choice, because this method is the most effective.
Social distancing policies have a fatal impact on the wheels of human life, economic problems that are most felt the impact, because this touches various layers of society, the slowing down of the economic pace results in the closure of the primary human needs to fulfill it, because the state will be very burdened if it has to bear all the basic needs of each population.

No exception to the education sector also affected by this policy. The sudden decision of the government to dismiss or move the learning process from school / madrasa to at home, has made many parties confused.

The unpreparedness of school / madrasah stakeholders to carry out online learning is a major factor in this chaos, even though the government actually provides alternative solutions in assessing students as a condition of promotion or graduation from an educational institution during an emergency situation as it is today.
The transition to this way of learning forces various parties to follow the flow if possible
taken so that learning can take place, and the choice is the use of technology as a medium of online learning. Use this technology too
actually not without problems, many factors that inhibit the implementation of effectiveness
online learning includes:

1. Technology mastery is still low.

It must be admitted that not all technology literate teachers, especially generation X teachers (born 1980 and below) who were not using massive technology during their time.

Actually they are not able to if they want to learn, they must be able to because the principle is the teacher is human
learners who must always be ready to face the changing times while following their development.
The situation is almost the same for students, not all are accustomed to using technology in their daily lives. Even in schools they have to fight in using learning support technology because of the limited facilities owned by schools / madrasas, maybe even they are not introduced to technology in
learning.

2. Limited facilities and infrastructure
The ownership of technology supporting devices is also a problem. No secret
general that the welfare of teachers is still very low, so let alone to fulfill things
To meet the basic needs of his family, there are still many teachers who struggle. The same thing happens to students, because not all of their parents are able to give
technological facilities to her children. Even if they have facilities, they are not used as media to support learning, due to ignorance of parents in
guiding his child to the use of technology in learning.

3. Internet network
Online learning cannot be separated from the use of the internet network. Not all schools / madrasas are connected to the internet so that the teachers are also in their daily lives
not used to using it. Even if someone uses a cellular network, sometimes the network is unstable because of the geographical location which is still far from the reach of cellular signals.

4. Cost
The internet network that is needed in online learning is a problem for teachers and students. The quota purchased for internet needs has increased and many of the teachers and parents of students are not ready to increase the budget for providing internet networks.
This online learning method is actually not new, because in some countries
especially in developed countries this activity is used. The learning process in tertiary institutions especially, not only abroad but in Indonesia is also used to being implemented, however
for learning at the level of elementary and secondary education units is not yet so popular that it takes real preparation to run well.
The development of the times will require changes in civilization, and this will have an impact on the way or methods of learning that are commonly done. In an age of technology as it is today, it is possible that the next Teaching and Learning Process will be carried out online, given the effectiveness in the transfer of knowledge that is very good, fast, easy and inexpensive.
Changes in civilization and this method requires educational stakeholders to prepare themselves to follow the development of the era as it is today. Nobody can
refute or reject the rapid development of this technology, even if someone rejects it, then get ready to be left behind, even be crushed by others.
Technology is like two blades, each of which has an equal role, namely the sides
positive and negative effects on changes in human civilization. All aspects of life today cannot be separated from technology, therefore technology literacy is very much
important for society, so that the use of technology is truly beneficial without harming and
also has a negative impact on the fabric of life.
Specifically in the field of education, this technological literacy needs to be learned by all education stakeholders, especially in its use as the current online learning media,

on going. The things that need to be understood and realized by educational stakeholders include:

1. Parents
True children's education is the absolute responsibility of parents, because in the future even parents will be held accountable for their respective children. PBM activities
conducted online forcing parents to be directly involved in activities
learning of their children, many experiences that they feel when they have to accompany.
Crowded in various social media that tells their experiences during accompanying
her children learn both positive and negative. Like for example it turns out there are parents who
often get angry because they have unruly children so they can't stand it
want their children to learn again at school.
This incident gave awareness to parents that it was not easy to educate children, it requires enormous knowledge and patience. So with this incident
parents must realize and know how to guide their children
in learning, it is hoped that after getting this experience parents want to learn how to educate their children at home.
Home is the first and foremost place in educating children, therefore with the implementation of online learning when children will be more at home and
they need guidance from their parents. The function of the house is now increasing, namely as a school, parents must learn how to educate and provide knowledge to children, because the teacher or school functions only as a facilitator.

2. Teacher
Online learning must be an awareness for teachers that their current role is
teachers who only transfer knowledge will one day be replaced by more sophisticated teachers, namely machine teachers. The media to gain knowledge now is very much
many, do not depend on the teacher alone even there are still many limitations.
Nowadays there are many media that can play the role of teacher, and there are even terms human and machine teachers. Technology can play a role as a teacher, well this teacher is called a machine teacher, science
very much knowledge can be learned using machines, let's say the media is the internet. By using the internet people can find out something
he wanted quickly without being limited by time and space.
Teachers who only position themselves as transferring knowledge already have.

3. School
Schools as educational institutions must be prepared to anticipate changes in human civilization. Changes in human behavior that tend to not be separated from technology in all its activities must also be followed by schools / madrasas.
The impact of the co-19 pandemic provides valuable experience, how the role of schools / madrasas that have been central to education seems meaningless. Educational programs
conducted in schools / madrasas which were considered very important because they affect the quality of education now seems to be meaningless. The government canceled the National Examination (UN), the National Standard School Examination (UASBN), prohibited activities that gathered large crowds and other important programs that could be carried out in schools / madrasas.
These activities are now replaced by activities that must be done online, although currently the government does not require all school / madrasah programs to
implemented online because of the current situation in an emergency. But I believe that online activities can now be the initial process of paradigm shift
about implementing PBM in education from pre-school to higher education.
Therefore, if a school / madrasah does not want to be excluded from this change, then inevitably it must follow this change. Schools / madrasas must start thinking of facilities and
supporting infrastructure for online learning, training teachers to master online learning support technology and socializing to students and parents about changes in learning methods to be implemented.
One time it is possible that the magnificent buildings of schools / madrasas which were initially crowded with the hustle and bustle of the activities of teachers and students, only a memory and become a quiet place
which may change its function because it is not used again for learning activities. Humans at that time did not need to learn to come to school, just stay at home, play computers, laptops or gadgets to carry out learning activities, the teacher needed to be a mentor and facilitator from a distance whose activities were the same as students, namely simply playing the devices needed to support online learning .
The current situation is a challenge for the world of education, changing management
education is needed to keep pace with changes very quickly. Manual and conventional learning methods are now starting to be replaced by online digital systems that are not limited by time and space. The role of schools / madrasas today is more dynamic, no longer just a gathering place for teachers and students who will implement PBM.

4. Government
The role of government is very important in determining policies related to the national education system. All educational institutions must obey and obey the rules
determined, because national education has the same goal in efforts to build the nation. In an emergency situation such as the current pandemic covid-19, the government quickly issued a policy regarding the implementation of online learning that must be carried out by every educational institution, even though the rules are not binding.
In other situations, this policy might be continued from another perspective. Technological advances that allow for the implementation of online learning,
also see the culture of people who are technologically literate, it is not impossible that this policy will continue and become a decree made by the government to be implemented. And me again-
again believing that this method will be the usual method in PBM in the future.
The government must have prepared rules to establish this policy, because it pays attention to the global community that cannot be separated from technology / internet at this time.
Indonesia inevitably has to follow the current trend if it doesn't want to be left behind
by other countries. After establishing this policy the government should also pay attention to supporting devices so that people can follow this policy properly without negative excesses and create new problems, because of the diversity of economic, social, geographic and other factors that exist in Indonesia.
Every change in civilization will certainly have positive and negative consequences, but all people must be able to follow these changes which of course is limited by the norms that apply in society itself. Humans are social creatures that can not possibly live
without interaction with others both locally and globally.
The shift of human behavior from manual to digital as it is happening today in terms of the positive
is that it can make it easier to solve human affairs. Work can be done without
requires a long time, costs can be pressed and unlimited space. Nowadays people can meet their needs while in the house.
